Origen i funcions
L'Institut Valencià d'Investigacions Agràries (IVIA) és un organisme autònom de la Generalitat, amb personalitat jurídica pròpia, creat per la Llei 4/1991 de la Generalitat Valenciana de 13 de març.
L'IVIA té al seu càrrec els fins propis de la Generalitat Valenciana d'impulsar la investigació científica i el desenvolupament tecnològic en el sector agroalimentari valencià i d'integrar aquesta contribució al progrés de la ciència agrària en el sistema de relacions de col · laboració i cooperació propi de la activitat investigadora.
Encara que la promulgació d'esta llei atorgà al nostre institut l'estatus jurídic actual, no suposà, en sentit estricte, el seu naiximent com a organisme investigador. El mateix preàmbul de la llei així ho expresa, en referir-se a la transferència del Centre Regional d'Investigació i Desenvolupament Agrari de Llevant (CRIDA-07) a la Generalitat Valenciana en 1984. Este Centre, a la seua vegada, fou hereu d'altres institucions i així ho detallà recentment el Dr. Salvador Zaragoza en el seu llibre Origen y actividades del Instituto Valenciano de Investigaciones Agrarias (1868-2000).

Divendres que ve, 28 de juny, a les 13 h., tindrà lloc en la Sala d'actes de l'Institut Valencià d'Investigacions Agràries (IVIA, Montcada, València) un seminari extraordinari a càrrec del Prof. Samir Droby (CÉRCOL, Volcani Center, Israel) titulat ‘Biological Control of Postharvest Diseases – New Concepts and Perspectives’.

[Prof. Samir Droby. Short biography
Samir Droby is a senior research scientist at the ARO, the Volcani Center, and a Professor of Plant Pathology and postharvest Sciences at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Samir has extensive research expertise in postharvest pathology in general and in developing biological and naturally-based control strategies for pre and postharvest diseases. In the past 30 years, he has been working closely with the citrus industry and other fruit crop exporters to develop advanced protocols for postharvest handling and testing new and reduced-risk chemical treatments to prevent postharvest decay. He also did extensive basic research work on elucidating the mechanism of action of yeast biocontrol agents, pathogenicity mechanisms of Penicillium species, and resistance mechanisms of fruits against postharvest pathogens. He pioneered the exploration and development of commercial biological control products (e.g., 'Noli' and 'Aspire') that are based on naturally occurring yeasts. In recent years, he has been developing an active research program about the fruit microbiome and its manipulation for beneficial effects against postharvest pathogens. He also has been investigating the pathobiome concept in understanding the disease process of postharvest pathogens. Prof. Droby published more than 230 articles in peer-reviewed international journals, 30 review articles, and 26 book chapters on various topics on postharvest pathology.]
