Origen y funciones
El Instituto Valenciano de Investigaciones Agrarias (IVIA) es una entidad autónoma de la Generalitat, con personalidad jurídica propia, creada por la Ley 4/1991 de la Generalitat Valenciana de 13 de marzo.
El IVIA tiene a su cargo los fines propios de la Generalitat Valenciana de impulsar la investigación científica y el desarrollo tecnológico en el sector agroalimentario valenciano y de integrar esta contribución al progreso de la ciencia agraria en el sistema de relaciones de colaboración y cooperación propio de la actividad investigadora.
Aunque la promulgación de esta ley otorgó a nuestro instituto su actual estatus jurídico, no supuso, en sentido estricto, su nacimiento como organismo investigador. El propio preámbulo de la ley así lo expresa, al referirse a la transferencia del Centro Regional de Investigación y Desarrollo Agrario de Levante (CRIDA-07) a la Generalitat Valenciana en 1984. Este Centro, a su vez, fue heredero de otras instituciones y así lo detalló recientemente el Dr. Salvador Zaragoza en su libro Origen y actividades del Instituto Valenciano de Investigaciones Agrarias (1868-2000).

Researchers from the IVIA-Centro de Investigación y Tecnología Animal (CITA) have finalized the first trial conducted within the framework of the European project WaysTUP!
The WaysTUP project! aims to demonstrate the establishment of new value chains for the use of urban bio-waste through a multidisciplinary approach, in line with the circular economy. Turning urban biowaste into a resource is the main key to a circular economy.
Specifically, the first trial carried out by the Animal Feeding research team at IVIA-CITA is part of work package 5 “Evaluation of PILOTs, end-products and new value chains from urban biowaste”. This has consisted of evaluating the digestible protein and amino acids content of insect meals for growing broiler chickens. This meal is obtained from black soldier fly larvae (Hermetia illucens) provided by the Universidad de Alicante, where they are reared and fed with biowaste.
Insect meals have recently been authorized by the European Commission as feed for poultry and pigs, along with other processed animal proteins (Commission Regulation (EU) 2021/1372 of 17 August 2021). The results obtained by the research group headed by Dra. Alba Cerisuelo and Dr. Ernesto A. Gómez in the framework of this project will help to complete the nutrient matrix of these ingredients, so that they can be used safely and efficiently in feed formulation for the livestock sector.
